This is a specialised course.

What is the aim of this course?

This course will give an update on the directives constituting the so-called 'Consumer Acquis' and in particular focus on the adopted Consumer Rights Directive and the respective changes in the legislation. The CRD integrates 2 directives of the current consumer acquis and will provide the legal regime for all consumer purchase contracts of a domestic or a cross border nature, when shopping in the grocery store at the corner or on-line from the Internet.

It will have a very direct impact on the everyday life of each consumer in the EU, and it is key that consumer organisations are aware of the changes in the legislation as well as of new concept introduced in the legislative process in order to ensure that the final outcome benefits consumers.

The course will also give an overview of the recent proposal of the European Commission for a regulation on a Common European Sales Law (the so-called optional instrument). This initiative covers important parts of the consumer acquis such as the Consumer Rights Directive, the 1993 Unfair Contract Terms Directive and 1999 Consumer Sales Directive and aims to co-exist alongside national systems of consumer contract law.
